Application of slaker grits industrial waste as a primary calcium oxide source in a ceramic frit formulation

Wastes management studies concerning slaker grits, a rich calcium carbonate landfilled residue from the pulp and paper industry, are focused on their application in construction field due to calcareous nature. To best of our knowledge, grits addition high content ceramic frit formulation behavior as glaze has not yet been explored, being aim this work. Grits were added oxide source 0, 50%, 100%, frits analyzed regarding chemical composition, devitrification, sintering behavior, morphology, colorimetric coordinates, scratch resistance. By means comparison, commercial was also characterized. The glazes by physical thermal properties did prevent vitreous phases obtention and, compared frit, presented similar although resulted higher wollastonite devitrification that directly affected glazes’ properties, contraction, linear expansion coefficient, among others. A great outcome quartz resistance containing highest content, revealing an optimized behavior. proved be promising alternative raw material capable generating sustainable economic perspectives for coating sector.
